How to Clean Out Your Gutters

11 Feb

Cleaning out the gutters can hardly be described as a preferred chore. However, there is no denying the importance of cleaning out the gutters.

Cleaning out the gutters prevents them from clogging, a gutter problem that can easily redirect water into a home and cause water damage. According to home experts, the gutters should be cleaned at least twice a year; more frequently if surrounded by trees. With that in mind here is a short guide to cleaning the gutters:

Ladder

Be sure to set the ladder on even ground to provide stability when climbing it. Homeowners are advised to always have someone below to keep the ladder steady and to hand you any items you may need.

Tools

A simple garden trowel is enough to remove any debris and mud that your gutters may have accumulated. You will also want to bring trash bags to place the debris and gutter goop in. After clearing the gutters, generously hose down the entire length to remove anything you may have missed.

Cleaning the gutters is a relatively simple chore, but it can be dangerous as there is an ever-present risk of falling off the ladder. With that in mind, it might be best to have gutter guards installed over your gutters once they have been cleaned. Not only does this prevent debris from accumulating in your gutters, it keeps you safe on the ground.
